We seek a talented Senior Risk & Compliance Auditor to join our growing Internal Audit team. The successful candidate should be an experienced Risk and Compliance internal auditor or advisor, gained in the banking or regulated financial services sector. You will be passionate about making a real impact on the Bank's controls and business processes because this is key to our mission. With manager support, direction and guidance the job holder will develop relationships with management, plan and execute audits across the Bank’s the first and second line Risk and Compliance arrgamnets.. You will support and help Starling's management protect its assets, reputation, and sustainability as it continues on its growth path and delivers fantastic products and services.

This position focuses on all of the key elements of a strong enterprise wide risk management and internal control framework. 

What you will be doing

  • Contribute to audits in  as part of team, harnessing a deep understanding of risk, compliance, and conduct.
  • Undertaking specialist regulatory reviews on areas such as Consumer Duty, SMCR, RCSA implementation review and implementation, and having a good knowledge of the PRA & FCA Handbook – Principles, Rules and Guidelines.
  • Working effectively with the first line controls functions, our third line co-source partners, and the second line assurance teams to deliver high quality, relevant, and forward-looking independent assurance
  • Support the delivery of insightful audit reports, ensuring factual accuracy is agreed upon and managing stakeholder communications
  • Draw and articulate well-formulated conclusions and pragmatic recommendations, as well as inspire and be an agent of positive change throughout Starling
  • Support with tracking progress in addressing audit recommendations and validating their closure
  • Build and maintain strong professional relationships at all levels
  • Document work papers to ensure consistency with audit methodology and quality standards, including formulation of logical and supportable conclusions
  • Contribute proactively to achieving Group Internal Audit’s performance objectives and work effectively as part of a team
  • Several years of Financial Services experience as an internal auditor or advisor 
  • A good understanding of the principles and practices that underpin a robust three lines risk governance and internal control model.
  • Understanding of Regulatory Compliance, risk management programs and regulations, banking regulations, UK standards, FCA Handbook, particularly Consumer Credit Rules (CONC), Complaints Rules (DISP) and the overarching Consumer Duty regulations.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, enabling delivery of outputs within deadline and budget
  • Good influencing and negotiating skills, able to manage challenging conversations and challenge constructively to support sustainable growth and ensure appropriate outcomes for our customers
  • Ability to identify practical, cost-effective control improvements
  • Excellent communication and writing skills, including the ability to articulate balanced opinions and explain technical audit findings in a straightforward manner to senior stakeholders not familiar with the technical detail
  • Self-starter and can-do approach with a level of flexibility to adapt to work in a fast-paced, agile, yet highly regulated environment
  • A strong team player, technically proficient and with high empathy 
  • Solid understanding of the 2025 Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) standards
  • Broad regulatory knowledge and experience, as well as staying abreast of business/industry changes and their effect on the team's audit plan, audit methodology and risk assessments

Desirable Criteria

  • Relevant degree, certification or industry accreditation or interest in obtaining industry-recognised certifications (e.g. ICA) is a plus
