The Role

As a Lab Software Engineer, you will be responsible for helping to create the tools that our scientists require to develop, test, build, and enhance Nu Quantum’s quantum networking solutions. You will be part of the software team, which develops software for internal lab use as well as the control and user interfaces for our prototype products. You will work closely with our scientists and engineers to automate experiments, developing and using software to control and monitor equipment in our quantum optics laboratory. You will help to bring up these hardware systems and their control software and support their deployment, maintenance, and use.

Responsibilities:

  • Write and maintain code to automate measurements using the ARTIQ control system.
  • Help scientists write and test their experiment control scripts.
  • Monitor and test the performance of control software to identify issues, including diagnostic measurements on real hardware.
  • Troubleshoot issues and implement novel solutions.
  • Create high-quality, testable, and maintainable code.
  • Collaborate with a diverse team of scientists to solve a range of problems.
  • Maintain software control. PCs and tools, keeping them up to date and working.

Your Skills, Qualifications, and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent industry experience
  • Experience with developing software with Python
  • Experience with writing software to control laboratory equipment
  • Interest in quantum computing
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders
  • Excellent team player and problem solver with a ‘can do’ attitude

Other (Desirable but not required)

  • Ability to solve complex problems and communicate your solutions
  • Masters or PhD degree in relevant subject
  • Experience working independently in a laboratory environment
  • Experience using ARTIQ to control complex experiments
  • Experience of agile development workflows
  • Familiarity or experience with
    • Development on and using Windows and Linux
    • Git for version control
    • Development in extra programming languages
    • Writing testable, maintainable code
    • Equipment used for optics/photonics experiments, such as lasers, photodiodes, and oscilloscopes.
